Final Exam

 Deep Web Search
For the article written by Clay Shirky, I went to EBSCO HOST and typed in Internet smarter or dumber. When the result were presented it was the first article on the results list. I then clicked on "Find It " and then it brought me to the Lewis D. Cannell Library result screen showing the article citation information and where it could be located. I than proceeded to click on "Article " and it then brought me to ProQuest.  I am including the citation information from this posting.

Clay Shirky.  "Does the Internet Make You Smarter or Dumber? " Wall Street Journal  5  Jun 2010, Eastern edition: Wall Street Journal, ProQuest. Web.  16 Mar. 2011.

Open Web Search
For the article written by Nicholas Carr, I went to Bing and typed in Internet smarter dumber. When the results appeared; the third Title stated was, "Does the Internet Make You Dumber?" It had WSJ.com posted  in the description which also included, "Does the Internet make you smarter." I clicked on it and I was brought to The Wall Street Journal Digital Network.  The article that was open was written by Nicholas Carr, but the title was, "Does the Internet Make You Dumber?" I proceeded to read the article, but I was concerned over the fact that the title was different. Then I noticed that in the directions it mentions that the title and dates of these article changes depending on which  search you do, "open or deep web."
Note: To make sure that I had the correct article I went back to my "deep web" source-ProQuest and I found the article titled " Does the Internet Make You Smarter or Dumber", written by Nicholas Carr and when I examined the text of both of the articles written by Mr. Carr, the text matched word for word.I assumed I had the correct article.

ASPECT  Evaluation.
The first thing that I looked at was the Authors of the articles to see if they were credible sources and what their expertise were. Clay Shirky has more creditability dealing with the Internet due to the fact that  he counsels, teaches and has written about  the social and economic effects of Internet technologies.  He is also an adjunct professor at NYU's graduate Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP), where he teaches courses on  how  Internet technology has affected society and our culture. He has held many positions that have been associated with the Interactive technology filed.  He seems very knowledgeable about this topic.

Whereas Nicholas  Carr on the other hand  writes about economics, technology and culture. He has a Masters in English and American Literature and Language, from Harvard University.  He is an educated man, but just doesn't seem to have the Internet impact-technology experience that Shirky has.His article is well written.

Both articles come from the same  reliable source, The Wall Street Journal. It is a magazine that deals with  current information dealing with opinions, events or situations at hand.

In Mr. Carr's article he does quote some very supportive resources, such as an article in Science by  Patricia Greenfield, and mentions experiment results from Cornell University and Stanford  University.  He also mentions information about  neuroscientist Micheal Merzenich. It is a well written article, but  Mr. Carr's article seems to be a more bias. He seem to want to find quotes and information that support the subject of his new book, "The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to our Brains"  .

Whereas Mr. Shirky mentions some web sites and how they have influence users, but his article does not quote other resource. His knowledge on how technology has advance and how the Internet can fuel the intellectual  achievements and how it can affect the cultural aspects of society and institutions seem to be the strength of article. His understands that adjustments need to be made to utilize the technology and the full benefit of the growth and development in this field.

Both articles were written recently, so they both are current and seem to be up to date.
But each article seems to have a different  under tone. Mr. Carr's seems to be more bias, as if trying prove or support what he is stating.
Whereas Mr. Shirky's article is discussing the impact of technology in the past and how it will impact our future. He presents the notion of dealing with the good and bad that comes from such technology advancements and how advancements impact the social aspect of our lives.

Review of Article.
I was first drawn to Mr. Carr's article "Does the Internet Make You Dumber?" because of how his article flowed as I read it. I am constantly telling my writers to write clearly and to support their  topic sentences. It is evident that Mr.Carr has a Masters in English and  American Literature and Language by this article.
But then I thought about our class and what I had learned all quarter. I could not justify using his article to support something that I had learned was not true. So my review is going to be on Mr. Shirky's article, "Does the Internet Make You Smarter or Dumber? ".
In the article Mr. Shirky implies that with "Every increase with freedom to create or consume media"  brings concern or alarm to those that use the old way. They tend to worry about the influence that will happen on society and the next generation. He uses the example of the of movable type and how it impacted society with "vulgar versions of the Bible and distracting secular writings that fueled the religious unrest." Which at the same time echoed the need for control over the "press", else it could lead to "chaos" and change the "European intellectual life" Which in the long run Print did change the dynamics of their lives. When something  drastically new is introduced to society such as electricity, the railroad, the telephone, the automobile, and media technology advancements, it changes and influences the life style of those that are exposed to it.
With each one of these advancements society as a whole adjusted,  adapted, and changed. Mr. Shirky examines the fact that even though there were changes that occurred because of this advancement(Print), there were innovations that were created that increased the intellectual range and output of society. He talks about how we need to figure out how to shape or utilize our "digit tools". He mentions about how as technology advances so does all of the information that the consumer views. Yes some of it is not relevant, but a great deal of it is. It is our responsibility to determine what is important or beneficial for us to use. As we experiment with new ways of using this wonderful medium know as the Internet, lets remember that with advancement, comes change, but to say that the change is not beneficial to society is not correct. This medium -the Internet gives the user the opportunity to gain  information from academic and scholar archives. The Internet is a tool that will continue to change the way we use, look, read and gather information

Unit 10: Completed Web Page HOORAY

I shut my computer down and rebooted it and my web page has now been posted! So if you want to check out a really cool web site you have to click on

http://twoplayfulotters.com/students/epollard.html

This was a very challenging assignment. Our instructor did a beautiful job explaining it step by step, but she can't control it when we may have computer ERRORS and I had many of them. I had them downloading programs, I couldn't get programs to run. I was in tears.  It was very frustrating, but I took what I have learned; applied it and problem solved. And I didn't  have to call my son.
I marvel at the way technology has advanced and how technical the Internet is. The "ins and outs" of making a system run  smoothly, quickly and efficient is mind boggling. To understand just a small portion of what it takes to allow you to get to a web site is Amazing. To think of how far we have come in the field of communication and how we rely on computers and networking systems in our daily lives is interesting to someone who thought cordless phones were out of this world.
I wonder what it will be like in 5 years and what other advancements the computer industry might have?
One thing for sure the knowledge that I have learned from this class is vitally important and very beneficial.

Unit 10: Create a Web Page

Presently, I am experiencing computer difficulty. I can not get FileZilla to work. I first of all had problems with downloading the program. I have sent out an email for help. I have created my web page, but can't post it at this time. And with all of my other projects due, I can't spend my entire day tomorrow or Sunday trying to complete the last assignment. I can't control  whether a program is going to run properly or not. I do like how my web page turned out. It would be nice for others to see it.

Unit 9: Summary

For some reason this assignment seemed a little off for me.  I probably could have found better results for ".edu and .gov" by using the subject directories that we experimented with in unit 8, but for some reason I was thinking of Search Engines where I had to physically change the search domain. I know that sounds  strange , but for some reason my mind kept me in Search Engines like Google and Bing.
I thought it was interesting how it was difficult to find a  ".gov" and a  ".org" site that truly supported my search statement. I thought the government search engine would be an easy one. But I found that sites weren't centralized in their focus. A government office in California may be dealing with a technology issue or a senator may be announcing his appointment to a privacy committee, but to find a department that dealt with issues of privacy, technology and protection that was a little more difficult.
I thought the organization search engine would be difficult and it was. It was hard finding a legitimate organization that stood for or associated with both the issues of privacy and technology. Yet, the site I found seems to support the legal aspect I was looking for in an organization.
Maybe next time I'll try a bit harder and get out of my rut and utilize the subject directories that I know are there.

Unit 9: Finding Information on the Open Web

Below are my results from the Open Web Searches.

.com Search
Search Engine Used: Google
Search Strategy Used: Advance Search ---Technology Privacy
*Google will insert the word "and". The Advance Search  field allows the searcher to search a specific  domain and language. I chose .com and English.
Citation: Boyd, Danah.  "Why Privacy Is Not Dead."  Technology review.com.  MIT Technology Review, September/October 2010. Web.  4 March 2011. http://www.technologyreview.com/web/26000/?a=f
Credible Site:  The reason why I chose this article was because I  was able to find more information about the author.  Her expertise in the field she is writing about is supported by her credentials and Biography posted for an award she is nominated for. I was also able to look up the history of MIT Press. This article  is also academically supported.

.edu Search
Search Engine: Google
Search Strategy Used: Advance Search---Technology Privacy
*Google will insert the word "and".  The Advance Search field  allows the searcher to search a specific domain and language. I chose .edu and English.
Citation: Eden, John M. "When Big Brother Privatizes: Commercial Surveillance, The Privacy Act Of 1974, And The Future Of RFID."  Duke Law And Technology Review. Duke University School Of Law:, 31 August  2005: Rev. 0020. Web. 4 March 2011.  http://www.law.duke.edu/journals/dltr/articles/2005dltr0020.html
Credible Site: I was able to locate the Duke Law Review and analyze the fact that it is a scholar driven review and is academically supported. This Journal was about 22 pages in length and references were sited at the end of it. The author is associated with Duke Law, so he is knowledgeable about the subject at hand.

.gov Search
Search Engine: Bing
Search Strategy Used: Advanced Search --Technology  Privacy.
*Bing automatically inserts  "and" in  a search with two words. In the Advanced Search a specific domain can be chosen. I chose .gov.
The results were vast over 29,000,000, and as I began to examine the sites, many were dealing with Health care issues of Privacy, thus the technology was the computer entries of Health care Numbers. Not exactly what I was looking for.
Changed Search Strategy Used: Advanced Search; Privacy Issues with Technology, gov
This time the results changed a bit and the number dropped drastically.
Citation: Federal Trade Commission. "Exploring Privacy A RoundTable Series" 17 March 2010.  P095416. Web. 4 March 2011.  www.ftc.gov/bcp/workshops/privacyroundtables/index.shtm
Credible Site: This is the Governments Federal Trade Commission Site. It has been established to help Protect America's Consumers. This was a series of presentations done in different locations where the issue of privacy and technology was discussed. It was a current forum which means it took place recently in the year 2010.

.org Search
Search Engine: Bing
Search Strategy Used: Advance Search; Technology Privacy
Citation: "Privacy." EFF Electronic Frontier Foundation.  26 January 2009  Web. 4 March 2011. https://www.eff.org/issues/privacy
Credible Site: It was difficult to find a site that supported my Search Statement or Topic that seemed legitimate. . I finally located and organization that deals with legal issues that have dealt with Privacy and Technology. They have submitted cases to the Supreme Court and have dealt with issues of email information be collected illegally etc.  The history of the organization and the the individuals that work for it have credentials that support a legal counsel advisory committee. It seems to be an organization that is an advocate for individuals and  laws that threaten free speech, privacy, innovation and our rights to utilize technology.

Unit 8: Summary

Each one of these Search Tools are defiantly different.
I found that I felt most comfortable with the Internet Search Tool -Bing. I don't know if it was because it seemed to give me more options than the Metasearch Tools and the Subject Directories. There just seemed to be more features to entice the user. Having the advantage of  features seemed to enhance and direct the search thus engaging the user.
When I used the Metasearch Tools, they seemed to be limited. The postings seemed to be relevant in order, but I wish that they had related topics or related search ideas the user could utilize. It was harder for me to identify features that I liked with this search tool. I truly liked how Ixquick allows the user to access a site, leave the Tab open, return to the results list, and then open another site. Yet, I don't know  if I would use this Search engine for my next research project.
Subject Directories do contain some vital information. I liked how you could identify ejournals, scholar information and academic resources. This search engine reminded me a little of the deep web resources, maybe because they are maintained mostly be professional librarians. I recognize that they are not as vast as the deep web resources, but it seems as if their credibility is forthright and the information they hold is supportive and useful. I wish that the sites were a little more user friendly, but I believe I may access these sites in the future.

Unit 8: Types of Information-- Focus on Search Engines & Web Sites

After reading the IRIS tutorials I wanted to find  Search Tools in each category that made it simple to locate search tips or a help icon.  I am a person that likes instructions easily accessible.

Internet Search Tool: Bing
I thought it was interesting how Bing's homepage had hotspots that gave you information about the picture you are looking at. The homepage  has a "Help Icon" on it.  When you access the Table of Contents, a clear precise list is posted. The directions are understandable and easy to follow. Having this information so easily accessible made this a search tool that i wanted to explore
I liked the feature of Not having to type the word "and" in your search. By default all searches are "and" searches.
I also liked how there are Tabs at the top of the page and how you can See results in a different category, such as video, news, etc... all dealing with your search statement you gave entered, just by clicking a different tab.
I also like the Cached Page that comes up on the right hand side that Gives you a brief  introduction of the site. This is a great insight feature which gives you a chance to see if it might be worth your time to actually go to the site.  Sometimes the blurb under the title of the site just does not give you enough information and sometimes I wasted time going to sites that were not beneficial.
I also like the feature of the Search History which shows you what you have searched for and is posted on the left side of the screen under related searches. This allows you to visually keep track of exactly what you have used for your search statement.
I also like how if you have Already done a search and you want to Do an Advanced Search, the results from your previous search stays posted and the Advance Search box is placed at the top of the page still allowing you to view the list of site results.

Metasearch  Tool: Ixquick
I like how Ixquick Does not record your IP address. I know that seems rather simple, but protecting yourself and your personal information is important to me.
I like how Ixquick Rates its sites by stars and how the influence of other search engines are taken into account when rating them. Because of the fact that other search engines rate sites differently, to get a 5 star rating on Ixquick takes a great deal to achieve.
I like how you can Access the information on how to improve your search easily, by clinking on the Advance Search Icon when the advance search box is open. I also like how the Bold words in the advance search box Have explanation bubbles that appear when the cursor arrow is on them. Thus it gives you reminders of what you can do for that field. .
I think this is my favorite features, I like that when you choose a site that a Site Tab opens allowing you to view the site. Then when you're done, you can leave the tab open and go back to the result list or you can close it. To be able to maneuver through sites and leave tabs open so you can return to view or compare information is very beneficial.
NOTE * I found this particular search tool, Metasearch Tool, not has comfortable for me to manipulate as the Internet Search Tool previously used. I don't know if I would utilize it for my next research project.

Subject Directories: INFOMINE
First I choose this site Becka of the fact the on its home page both Search Tips and Advance Search were posted so this information is easy to locate. It also has an Other Search Tools option on the home page.
I like how in the Advanced Search Box you can Modify your Search  Options, so you can choose which search categories you would like to focus in such as ejournals etc...
I like how at this same option Search Tips is posted in the right top hand corner and how when you click on it, a box opens to your left allowing you to find tips that may be applicable without you losing site of the screen which you need to fill in.
I like the simple Picture Icons that show how it's been selected, like a "graduation hat" for selected by Librarians.
You can post all results by "Title Only". this turns out to be a long list titles with a Picture Icon next to it which explains how it is selected, if its a fee based site, if on CD Rom, etc.
You can also search  by  Specific Defined Subtitle Categories, such as Biological, Agricultural & Medical Sciences, Business and Economics, Cultural Diversity & Ethnic Resources, Electronic Journals, Government Information, Maps & GIS, Physical Sciences, Engineering, Computing & Math, Social Sciences & Humanities, and  Visual & Performing Arts.
NOTE*  I may use these Subject Directories to search ejournals, or even specific Subtitle Categories. but deep web  resources also offer this information. .

Unit 7: Finding Articles in Periodical Indexes Summary

          I found this a very informative assignment. I started with;
Tec* and (Privacy or Security) as my search statement.
Last week, I used synonyms in hopes of coming up with more support for my statements. Yet, as I started experimenting with the databases, I found that some of my statements were too broad and that the synonyms caused me to view articles dealing more with the synonym words than with what I really wanted to focus on.  So I revised my search statement a bit.  I finally came up with  "Technology and Privacy" the suggestion of my professor. Once I made that change my search was more concise and topic related.
The most difficult article for me to find was the Scholarly  Journals. When I would truly examine the article and look up the publication, I found that several of the articles I wanted to use were considered  Trade Publication Journals. They were short articles, several included pictures, their publications were not quarterly, and they seemed to focus more on topics associated with a particular field such as computer technology.  They were not academically disciplined.
It is very reassuring knowing that you can utilize these resources when doing a research project. I feel that each assignment has given me new tools that will assist me in the future.

Unit 7: Finding Articles in Periodical Indexes

I appreciated your comments about my research statement.. When I first started experimenting with the data bases I entered the final statement I personal came up with from Unit 6;
Question: How has privacy been effected by technology?
FINAL STATEMENT:  Tec* and (Privacy or Security)
I did have good results, but as I analyzed the"titles of the articles", I noticed that several were dealing more with security than privacy.
So I took your advice and I adjusted my search statement to Technology and Privacy.
The following are the article results for the different resources, Popular Magazine, Scholarly Journal, Trade Publication Journal, and Newspaper.

Magazine: PC World
Title of the Article: HOW TO PROTECT YOUR DIGITAL LIFE
Citation: Anonymous, . "HOW TO PROTECT YOUR DIGITAL LIFE. " PC World  1 Apr. 2009: Vol. 27, Iss. 4; pg. 46, 1 pgs. Platinum Periodicals, ProQuest. Web.  18 Feb. 2011.
Annotation: I chose this article because of its title. In my original questions, I was asking how our privacy has been effected by technology and the advancement of the Internet?  I often wonder how we can ensure our privacy and keep ourselves safe while using the Internet.  I thought the title of this article sounded like it would support those question. It seems as technology keeps advancing the need for us to use a computer/Internet is increasing, understanding how you can protect our privacy and safe guard our personal information is vitally important.

Scholarly Journal: Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law
Title of the Article: DIGITAL MULTI-MEDIA AND THE LIMITS OF PRIVACY LAW
Citation: Lipton, J.. "DIGITAL MULTI-MEDIA AND THE LIMITS
OF PRIVACY LAW." Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law
42.3 (2010): 551-571. Research Library, ProQuest. Web.  19 Feb. 2011.

Annotation: I chose this article because it contained the elements needed to be able to quote a scholarly journal. First, it is a long and an in-depth article (21 pages) Second, It is a journal that focuses on an academic discipline-Law. Lastly, the way that the paper read. It stated a directive, then had a process presented as to support or analyze the process. It was difficult for me to find a true scholar article. Several times I would fine an article that supported my search statement, but then when I would click the "Find It" Article Button, it would say, "sorry this article is not immediately available." Which would lead me to another search. It was a little frustrating.

Trade Publication Journal: Association for Computing Machinery. Communications of the ACM
Title of the Article: Privacy and Security: Myths and Fallacies of "Personally Identifiable Information"
Citation: Narayanan, A., and V. Shmatikov. "Privacy and Security: Myths and Fallacies of "Personally Identifiable Information". Association for Computing Machinery. Communications of the ACM  Jun. 2010: Vol. 53, Iss. 6; pg. 24. Platinum Periodicals, ProQuest. Web.  18 Feb. 2011.
Annotation: I chose this article because it seemed to support the core of my question. The credentials of the authors were also present. Arvind Narayanan  is a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University and  Vitaly Shmatikov  is an associate professor of computer science at the University of Texas at Austin.  This Trade Publication Journal is dealing with articles associated with the profession of computers technology. Trade publications are the periodicals you can use to keep up with the news in a certain profession. Articles are related to a specific field, but they're typically not research-length or peer-reviewed.
**I found that several of the articles that I wanted to use were Trade Publications. They were not considered a true Scholarly Journal because when I looked at the actual publication journal, several articles were only a couple of pages, they included pictures and they were not academically disciplined.

Newspaper: The New York Times
Title of the Article: Technology Outpaces Privacy (Yet Again); [Money and Business/Financial Desk]
Citation: Natasha Singer. "Technology Outpaces Privacy (Yet Again) :[Money and Business/Financial Desk]." New York Times  12  Dec. 2010, Late Edition (East Coast): New York Times, ProQuest. Web.  19 Feb. 2011.
Annotation: I chose this article because of the summary that was posted. It seems to support  the key elements to my search statement and the underlining core questions I have about privacy and how its been effected by technology.

Unit 6: Database Features and Searching Techniques Part 2

Part 2: My Composed Research Questions
I took all three of my question and tried the Boolean Operators Procedure on them.
Again I will explain my process.

1. How has privacy been effected by technology?
I first wrote down,
Privacy and Technology
Then I shortened technology.
Privacy and Tech*
But then I realized that I could maybe broaden the search by adding a synonym and changing the order of the statement , so this is my
FINAL STATEMENT,
Tec* and (Privacy or Security)

2. What privacy concerns arise from using the Internet?
I first wrote down,
Privacy and Internet
Then I thought about synonyms or words associated with the Internet and I came up with,
Privacy and (Internet or Computer)
But then I realized that I could get a broader search applying truncating with this statement, my
FINAL STATEMENT,
Priv* and (Internet or Comp*)

3.  What steps should be taken to secure ones privacy when using the computer?
I first wrote down,
Security and Privacy and Computer
But then I examined my question more closely and I asked,  "What was the focus and could I apply truncating?" ,  I came up with this statement for my,
FINAL STATEMENT
Computer and (Priv* or Secur*)

Unit 6: Database Features and Searching Techniques Part 1

Practice Question Portion
Through this journey I found myself asking, "what would give me more results?"  I had to go through a process to come up with my FINAL STATEMENT  I hope you don't mind , but I started with my first statement and then explain the process I went through to come up with the FINAL STATEMENT.

1. What are the similarities between the Great Depression of the
1930s and the current economic problems?
I first wrote down,
similarities great depression and current economic
I had way too many words so I then established this statement,
great depression and economics
Remembering the information I obtained in the IRIS tutorials and the videos, I came up with my
FINAL STATEMENT
great depression and econ*

2. What breeds of dogs make good therapy pets?
I first wrote down,,
best dog and therapy pet
It seemed wordy  so I came up with this statement,
dog for therapy pet
Then I realized that pet may limit the search and I remembered the "and" rule, so I came up with this
FINAL STATEMENT,
dog and therapy

3. Are big box stores like WalMart and Target good for the economy?
I first wrote down,,
Walmart and target and economy
But I began to question what am I comparing so I wrote down,
economy and (Walmart or Target)
But then I remembered that spelling an entire word  limits the search, so I came up with this
FINAL STATEMENT,
econ* and (Walmart or Target),

4. Will presidential election reform solve the issues with the electoral
college and the popular vote?
This was a tough one for me. I first wrote down,,
election reform and electoral college and popular vote
I felt that this was a bit wordy, so I tried to concise the statement.
election reform and (electoral college or popular)
I still felt that I had too much information and since electoral college is associated with the election  I established this
FINAL STATEMENT,
reform and (electoral college or popular)

5. How much more can a college graduate expect to earn over
someone with a high school diploma?
I first wrote down,
income and college grad* and high school;
Thinking that the grad needed to be there to show completion, but then I thought that just  stating the two levels of education would be enough, so I came up with,
income and college and high school
But then I realized what I was comparing two items and there was a different synonym for high school that could be used, so the phrase could be different. So this is my
FINAL STATEMENT,
income and (college or secon*)

Unit 5 Digging into Databases and Books: Summary

This assignment I found very interesting.  I personally dealt with computer difficulty. For some reason my browser program was not compatible  for the Book24x7 site. I had to chart a unknown journey of locating my cookies and security program.Who knew there were cookies in the computer, or I would have had many late night snacks. Even after trying three different browser programs I could not access "It Pro".
So now to the summary of the assignment.  Each one of these resources are just that a resource. The Cannell Library Book Catalog  and the Summit Catalog  each gave me that "old Library" feel.  I felt confident in the information and material I was able to find, yet because I did not have the book in hand; I question whether or not they would truly support the project as much as I hope. Once you obtain the actually item from the library then your will be able to make that call.
NetLibrary is a wonderful database site. After choosing a title it gave me the opportunity to type in key words or phases and view pages that contained such information. Thus it gives you the chance to see if the material within the text truly will be relevant to your research topic. Being able to do this for a variety of titles and at the same time cutting and pasting information into a file would be beneficial to any assignment.
When I accessed Google Books, I was pleased with the vast information that were at your fingertips. I found it very helpful to actually be able to read the material from a book that you may use for a research topic. You can determine whether or not its material would truly be supportive and beneficial to the project.  I liked being able to locate more information about the author and to see if they truly had the credentials to be writing about the topic they were writing about.
I do know that most likely when it comes to a research project that I would use a variety of these resources to support the topic. To just rely on the EBooks and  the Internet  to gather your information is something I would have to adjusted to. I'm sure that it can be accomplished because of the vast databases that are offered through universities and  specialized sites, but I still like visually seeing text on a page and then being able to physically  turn that page.

Unit 5 Digging into Databases and Books: NetLibrary

Due to the fact that I was having problems logging on to "It Pro" and could not access Books24x7, my instructor was very understanding and gave me the opportunity to examine a similar database. So I went to NetLibrary  and was able to complete the assignment.
There were no problems with me logging onto this site and it also accepted my Clark Student ID number as the password.

Credible Book Clues: I noticed that the publication date was 2002. I wish that  it could have been a little more current, But the subject of the book was ideal for one of my research questions.  I did like the feature of being able to type in key words or phrases and view pages that contained such information. Instead of your fingers doing the walking; EBook did the walking for you. I also liked being able to view the table of contents to see what the chapter headings were and what they may contain.

Unit 5 Digging into Databases and Books: It Pro-My Cookie Problem

Cookies anyone?   When I tried to log-in to the site the option never came up immediately,  it would tell me that I needed to log-in  through your library. I contacted the  Tech Support Site and I sent an email explaining my problem.  I also went to the Frequently Asked Question field and tried to figure out what was going on. I finally located my "cookies" and made sure that my firewall was accepting all programs. I even turned off the security system to the computer and it still would not allow me to get to the log-in icon for this site. I then re-read the steps that I was suppose to do and even with an email from the Tech Support Staff, added the site to the privacy sites and it still did not work. I will be shutting off my entire system to see if it will allow me to do this part of the assignment. Wait to see what happens,  man I sure could use a tall glass of milk and some cookies to go with it.
Day Two- after receiving several emails from the Tech Support Staff and running a compatibility test with a link they sent to me, it mentioned that Google Chrome could not support the site.  So I tried to add the programs they suggested. I even tried using two other browsers, Internet Explorer and FireFox. I finally got the initial log-in from the library site for It Pro, but once I would enter in my student Clark ID number for the password, it would send me back to the log-in error screen I viewed several times last night.

I am sure that if the Books24x7 site is anything like the Gale Virtual Reference Site we used for a previous assignment, it would be a very resourceful venue to use. Hopefully, my Cookie problems will become crumbs soon and I will be able to utilize this site for my benefit.

Unit 5 Digging into Databases and Books: Google Books

Google Books  is and excellent site to use for researching a topic. It gives the user the opportunity to link to several different fields that are associated with your topic. Personal I felt a little overwhelmed and out of my element. I guess I missed that orderly library feel; even though I had more options I felt a little disoriented.

Credible Book Clues: I was able to examine the table of contents and read the title of the chapters, I found this very helpful because I was able to determine whether or not the chapters headings would be useful for my research topic.  Also being able to read the pages that were posted allowed me to decide if the book would be supportive to the research. I was able to obtain some detailed information about the author, his background, and his expertise. Being able to access other material that is  related to this book was also helpful.  I was also able to locate information about  the hardback copy of the book and where I could get it. .
Search Differ: There were several links that allowed the user to open and obtain more information about the author,  publisher, and related topics.

Unit 4:Types Of Information Practice Questions and My Composed Questions.

For this assignment I will attempt to match informational resources that can be used to support stated questions. First will be the practice questions given in the assignment and then I will acknowledge sources that may be used for the research questions that I composed in Unit 3.

Practice Questions
1. Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat-based diet?
Resources that I would use to gather information about this topic is first, Academic Journals. This would be a good resource because it would be written by scholars or experts of the field and most likely a journal /article dealing with the exact topic would be easy to locate.  In fact, I am sure that there would be a few journals/articles to choose from which would allow the data to be compared. The second source I might use is a Book. Since I just took a health class dealing with nutrition last quarter; I would use the text book that was required from the class or another book that would deal with the comparison topic stated.

2. Target often forces musicians to alter lyrics in order to have their CDs sold in Target stores. Is this censorship?
For this question, a resource that I would use is  Subject/Academic Encyclopedias because they would allow me to examine or define the definition of censorship while getting an overview of the topic. I would also probably examine censorship cases using Academic Journals and Books.  I might even try to locate current information dealing with Target using Web Sites. These sources would have to be examined closely for credibility.

3. How much more can a college graduate expect to earn over someone with a high school diploma?
For this question resources  that I would use are Academic Journals Primary Research  and Statistics References and Online Sources. All should be able to provide statistics and data supporting current information dealing with this comparison question. I may also look for current articles in Magazines and Newspapers dealing with this issue due to the current economic situation.

4. Should educators use commercial services to combat plagiarism.?
This is an interesting topic. It is stated in a way that supports an opinion. Immediately, resources I think of using that deals with opinions are Magazines and Newspapers because they offer editorials and commentaries on such a topic. But after further thought I might also use Books and E-Book because they can contain summaries supporting such a statement.

5. Is the current lack of sunspot activity affecting the global warming?
The first resource I would use are Academic Journals because they would provide in-depth research information  on the subject and because most likely there would be more than one Journal on the topic.  I  would also use Subject/Academic Encyclopedias because they would give me background information on the topic.

Unit 3 My Composed Questions on Privacy

1. How has privacy been effected by technology?
One resource I would use to research this question are Subject /Academic Encyclopedias because both privacy and technology could be clarified while obtaining an overview of both topics. Then I would examine Academic Journals to locate In-depth Research on this topic. Lastly, I believe I would use Books to gather  a historical perspective,  in-depth information and current analysis of the situation at hand.

2. What privacy concerns arise from using the Internet?
For this question I would start with  Newspaper and Magazine articles because of the current issues that have been brought to the forefront due to postings on Face book, My Space, and Twitter accounts, such as suicide, bullying, and lawsuits. I would also use Books because of the in-depth treatment of information they may offer.

3.  What steps should be taken to secure ones privacy when using the computer?
For this question I would probably use Books and Reference Books or Manuals to explain the steps to take to secure your privacy when using the computer. I may use Manufactures Manuals or Directions that come with programs that you purchase for the computer or Web Sites that are associated with the Programs, Systems, or the Manufacture of the Computer you have.

Research Journal Unit 3 Exploring Topics: Summary

This was a very informative assignment. I was totally unaware of the fact that Wikipedia could be edited by any individual. Truthfully it's usually the first website I go to when I'm researching a topic.  I had no idea that it could be so easily changed. I did find the Gale Virtual Reference Library site rather impressive. The information that it has to offer truly does benefit any research assignment and its nice to know that it's an option for Clark students to use. Is it possible for an individual to join a site of that nature or would the cost be too expensive?   I also find the Library tutorials very resourceful information and its nice to know exactly where to go to find them.
Each assignment seems to be giving my a little more comfortable feeling in my abilities as I am taming this technology beast ---the computer.

Research Journal Unit 3 Exploring Topics: Compose Search Questions

Since doing my article research and because this is an Internet class I found myself intrigued by the privacy information dealing with the Internet.  I began to question how technology has impacted our personal privacy.
Below are the three focused or narrowed questions that I came up with for this assignment.

1. How has privacy been effected by technology?

2. What privacy concerns arise from using the Internet?

3.  What steps should be taken to secure ones privacy when using the computer?

I know that each of these questions are directed to today's technology, but each question is dealing with a different element. The first question could be dealing with cell phone cameras, video cameras, thermal imaging, as well as web access-the Internet.
The second question is more specific, dealing with privacy concerns while using the Internet.
The last question is asking what safety steps you should implement to secure your privacy while using the computer.

Personally, I am beginning to feel a little more comfortable in my ability of using the Internet with each assignment we do.

Research Journal Unit 3 Exploring Topics: Gale Virtual Reference Library

The Topic that I chose was Privacy.
I picked it because I wanted to look up information about a new topic.  It was amazing how many article dealt with this topic. Having a more concise research topic I'm sure would still provide many articles.

Research Journal, Part 2 Plagiarism Summary

So Exciting!
I Feel as if I am Learning information that is helping me battle the beast-Internet/computer.
I knew how important plagiarism was since I was a young teenager.
During this assignment I did find it very helpful to have tabs open so I could go back and forth between them to review information. I was able to locate the IRIS tutorials on the library site easily and will use them in the future as a resource. I will try to be more organized when it comes to gathering information.  Last quarter for a Health Class, I had to do a section of a group paper and I found myself  not having all of the information for quotes that I wanted to use because I didn't have all of the published information(Publication location & Company) Sometimes, I didn't even have the complete title of a book or article. I also forgot to get web address to quotes and charts. So in the future,  any paper or research assignment I will defiantly be more organized while gathering citation. I get very nervous about the bibliography section and sometimes get confused on exactly how to cite multiple author sources or live broadcast sources.  I found the Purdue site very helpful for this and  have placed it in my "favorites" for future references. It is my hope to be more aware of what needs to be collected and to get all of the "must have information"  as I collect it, so I can utilize sources to help my assignments with substance and strength.

Research Journal, Part 2 Plagiarism

My Nerves are at their wit ends.
While looking over "the terms and conditions of fair use" to the Purdue Owl Site, it stated "You may not copy and paste any information from the OWL into another document. All resources must be used as they appear on the OWL and in their entirety." The Purdue OWL Family of Sites. The Writing Lab and OWL at Purdue and Purdue U, 2008. Web. 14 Jan. 2011.

My plan was to cut and paste the questions that I needed to answer.  Making it look nice and neat.  Now hopefully I don't put myself into jeopardy of plagiarism.
But according to an email I received from The Purdue Owl, I may download the material I need as long as I don't change the format and go from there.  I hope I am doing this right.
Oh where is my knight in shining armor?
Here I go....

Safe Practices: An Exercise

Summary: There are few intellectual offenses more serious than plagiarism in academic and professional contexts. This resource offers advice on how to avoid plagiarism in your work.

Read over each of the following passages, and respond on your own or as a class as to whether or not it uses citations accurately. If it doesn't, what would you do to improve the passage so it's properly cited?
1. Last summer, my family and I traveled to Chicago, which was quite different from the rural area I grew up in. We saw the dinosaur Sue at the Field Museum, and ate pizza at Gino's East.
Answer: This in general or common information. You do not have to cite common knowledge or information, like the capital of a state or a name of a museum or restaurant.
2. Americans want to create a more perfect union; they also want to establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty for everybody.
Answer: These words are famous words from an historical document. There should be quotations place around the exact cited word for word. Then of course a stated or citation//bibliographic acknowledging the source.
3. I find it ridiculous that 57% of high school students think their teachers assign too much homework.
Answer: This seems to be a summary of a survey study on high school homework assignments. It is an arguable assertion because a percentage is stated and because this is statistically driven, it would need to be cited and the source acknowledge in a bibliography.
Numbers 4, 5, and 6 all refer to the following passage from Martin Luther King's "Letter from the Birmingham Jail":
You deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham. But your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations. I am sure that none of you would want to rest content with the superficial kind of social analysis that deals merely with effects and does not grapple with underlying causes. It is unfortunate that demonstrations are taking place in Birmingham, but it is even more unfortunate that the city's white power structure left the Negro community with no alternative.
4. Martin Luther King was certain that nobody would want to be contented with a surfacy type of social analysis that concerns itself only with effects and doesn't deal with root causes.
Answer: This statement above uses the idea of the article and it also uses exact wording. Then the rest of the sentence is paraphrased. There should be quotations around the actually words stated. The published article should be cited. Not just the mention of the author's name.
5. Martin Luther King wrote that the city of Birmingham's "white power structure" left African-Americans there "no alternative" but to demonstrate ("Letter from the Birmingham Jail" para. 5).
Answer: This seems to be correct. It depends which Style Manual the individual is using. This would determine how the exact citation would look like.
6. In "Letter from the Birmingham Jail," King writes to fellow clergy saying that although they "deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham, your statement fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations."
Answer: This statement seems correct also. Of course there would be an acknowledgment in a Bibliography with the full publication information.
7. My friend Kara told me that she loves living so close to the ocean.
Answer: This is a personal statement containing common information that two friends have shared with each other. It does not have to cited
8. Americans are guaranteed the right to freely gather for peaceful meetings.
Answer: This is general information stated in a common formality. If they would have stated the Amendment number or the actual wording from the Amendment, then it would have had to been acknowledged as a source of information. Thus citation would have had to be in place.

My first BLOG

Truthfully, I personally did not enjoy setting this up. I had difficulty with the program stating Error, contact blogger with this number.... I attempted to set up the account two times and in tears finally had my son come to the rescue. Oh my knight in shining armor.  I am from the old school. I don't trust the internet and tend to think that everyone is out to get me and my personal information.  My children are constantly making fun of me, but it is hard for me to totally trust a machine.  After finally getting my template chosen, I did enjoy playing with the color pallets creating my "own" look.  I do wish that I could use the rose picture for my background, but the file is too big. I wanted something that I would see each day that would remind me of my children.
