Unit 4:Types Of Information Practice Questions and My Composed Questions.

For this assignment I will attempt to match informational resources that can be used to support stated questions. First will be the practice questions given in the assignment and then I will acknowledge sources that may be used for the research questions that I composed in Unit 3.

Practice Questions
1. Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat-based diet?
Resources that I would use to gather information about this topic is first, Academic Journals. This would be a good resource because it would be written by scholars or experts of the field and most likely a journal /article dealing with the exact topic would be easy to locate.  In fact, I am sure that there would be a few journals/articles to choose from which would allow the data to be compared. The second source I might use is a Book. Since I just took a health class dealing with nutrition last quarter; I would use the text book that was required from the class or another book that would deal with the comparison topic stated.

2. Target often forces musicians to alter lyrics in order to have their CDs sold in Target stores. Is this censorship?
For this question, a resource that I would use is  Subject/Academic Encyclopedias because they would allow me to examine or define the definition of censorship while getting an overview of the topic. I would also probably examine censorship cases using Academic Journals and Books.  I might even try to locate current information dealing with Target using Web Sites. These sources would have to be examined closely for credibility.

3. How much more can a college graduate expect to earn over someone with a high school diploma?
For this question resources  that I would use are Academic Journals Primary Research  and Statistics References and Online Sources. All should be able to provide statistics and data supporting current information dealing with this comparison question. I may also look for current articles in Magazines and Newspapers dealing with this issue due to the current economic situation.

4. Should educators use commercial services to combat plagiarism.?
This is an interesting topic. It is stated in a way that supports an opinion. Immediately, resources I think of using that deals with opinions are Magazines and Newspapers because they offer editorials and commentaries on such a topic. But after further thought I might also use Books and E-Book because they can contain summaries supporting such a statement.

5. Is the current lack of sunspot activity affecting the global warming?
The first resource I would use are Academic Journals because they would provide in-depth research information  on the subject and because most likely there would be more than one Journal on the topic.  I  would also use Subject/Academic Encyclopedias because they would give me background information on the topic.

Unit 3 My Composed Questions on Privacy

1. How has privacy been effected by technology?
One resource I would use to research this question are Subject /Academic Encyclopedias because both privacy and technology could be clarified while obtaining an overview of both topics. Then I would examine Academic Journals to locate In-depth Research on this topic. Lastly, I believe I would use Books to gather  a historical perspective,  in-depth information and current analysis of the situation at hand.

2. What privacy concerns arise from using the Internet?
For this question I would start with  Newspaper and Magazine articles because of the current issues that have been brought to the forefront due to postings on Face book, My Space, and Twitter accounts, such as suicide, bullying, and lawsuits. I would also use Books because of the in-depth treatment of information they may offer.

3.  What steps should be taken to secure ones privacy when using the computer?
For this question I would probably use Books and Reference Books or Manuals to explain the steps to take to secure your privacy when using the computer. I may use Manufactures Manuals or Directions that come with programs that you purchase for the computer or Web Sites that are associated with the Programs, Systems, or the Manufacture of the Computer you have.

Research Journal Unit 3 Exploring Topics: Summary

This was a very informative assignment. I was totally unaware of the fact that Wikipedia could be edited by any individual. Truthfully it's usually the first website I go to when I'm researching a topic.  I had no idea that it could be so easily changed. I did find the Gale Virtual Reference Library site rather impressive. The information that it has to offer truly does benefit any research assignment and its nice to know that it's an option for Clark students to use. Is it possible for an individual to join a site of that nature or would the cost be too expensive?   I also find the Library tutorials very resourceful information and its nice to know exactly where to go to find them.
Each assignment seems to be giving my a little more comfortable feeling in my abilities as I am taming this technology beast ---the computer.

Research Journal Unit 3 Exploring Topics: Compose Search Questions

Since doing my article research and because this is an Internet class I found myself intrigued by the privacy information dealing with the Internet.  I began to question how technology has impacted our personal privacy.
Below are the three focused or narrowed questions that I came up with for this assignment.

1. How has privacy been effected by technology?

2. What privacy concerns arise from using the Internet?

3.  What steps should be taken to secure ones privacy when using the computer?

I know that each of these questions are directed to today's technology, but each question is dealing with a different element. The first question could be dealing with cell phone cameras, video cameras, thermal imaging, as well as web access-the Internet.
The second question is more specific, dealing with privacy concerns while using the Internet.
The last question is asking what safety steps you should implement to secure your privacy while using the computer.

Personally, I am beginning to feel a little more comfortable in my ability of using the Internet with each assignment we do.

Research Journal, Part 2 Plagiarism Summary

So Exciting!
I Feel as if I am Learning information that is helping me battle the beast-Internet/computer.
I knew how important plagiarism was since I was a young teenager.
During this assignment I did find it very helpful to have tabs open so I could go back and forth between them to review information. I was able to locate the IRIS tutorials on the library site easily and will use them in the future as a resource. I will try to be more organized when it comes to gathering information.  Last quarter for a Health Class, I had to do a section of a group paper and I found myself  not having all of the information for quotes that I wanted to use because I didn't have all of the published information(Publication location & Company) Sometimes, I didn't even have the complete title of a book or article. I also forgot to get web address to quotes and charts. So in the future,  any paper or research assignment I will defiantly be more organized while gathering citation. I get very nervous about the bibliography section and sometimes get confused on exactly how to cite multiple author sources or live broadcast sources.  I found the Purdue site very helpful for this and  have placed it in my "favorites" for future references. It is my hope to be more aware of what needs to be collected and to get all of the "must have information"  as I collect it, so I can utilize sources to help my assignments with substance and strength.

Research Journal, Part 2 Plagiarism

My Nerves are at their wit ends.
While looking over "the terms and conditions of fair use" to the Purdue Owl Site, it stated "You may not copy and paste any information from the OWL into another document. All resources must be used as they appear on the OWL and in their entirety." The Purdue OWL Family of Sites. The Writing Lab and OWL at Purdue and Purdue U, 2008. Web. 14 Jan. 2011.

My plan was to cut and paste the questions that I needed to answer.  Making it look nice and neat.  Now hopefully I don't put myself into jeopardy of plagiarism.
But according to an email I received from The Purdue Owl, I may download the material I need as long as I don't change the format and go from there.  I hope I am doing this right.
Oh where is my knight in shining armor?
Here I go....

Read over each of the following passages, and respond on your own or as a class as to whether or not it uses citations accurately. If it doesn't, what would you do to improve the passage so it's properly cited?
1. Last summer, my family and I traveled to Chicago, which was quite different from the rural area I grew up in. We saw the dinosaur Sue at the Field Museum, and ate pizza at Gino's East.
Answer: This in general or common information. You do not have to cite common knowledge or information, like the capital of a state or a name of a museum or restaurant.
2. Americans want to create a more perfect union; they also want to establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty for everybody.
Answer: These words are famous words from an historical document. There should be quotations place around the exact cited word for word. Then of course a stated or citation//bibliographic acknowledging the source.
3. I find it ridiculous that 57% of high school students think their teachers assign too much homework.
Answer: This seems to be a summary of a survey study on high school homework assignments. It is an arguable assertion because a percentage is stated and because this is statistically driven, it would need to be cited and the source acknowledge in a bibliography.
Numbers 4, 5, and 6 all refer to the following passage from Martin Luther King's "Letter from the Birmingham Jail":
You deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham. But your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations. I am sure that none of you would want to rest content with the superficial kind of social analysis that deals merely with effects and does not grapple with underlying causes. It is unfortunate that demonstrations are taking place in Birmingham, but it is even more unfortunate that the city's white power structure left the Negro community with no alternative.
4. Martin Luther King was certain that nobody would want to be contented with a surfacy type of social analysis that concerns itself only with effects and doesn't deal with root causes.
Answer: This statement above uses the idea of the article and it also uses exact wording. Then the rest of the sentence is paraphrased. There should be quotations around the actually words stated. The published article should be cited. Not just the mention of the author's name.
5. Martin Luther King wrote that the city of Birmingham's "white power structure" left African-Americans there "no alternative" but to demonstrate ("Letter from the Birmingham Jail" para. 5).
Answer: This seems to be correct. It depends which Style Manual the individual is using. This would determine how the exact citation would look like.
6. In "Letter from the Birmingham Jail," King writes to fellow clergy saying that although they "deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham, your statement fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations."
Answer: This statement seems correct also. Of course there would be an acknowledgment in a Bibliography with the full publication information.
7. My friend Kara told me that she loves living so close to the ocean.
Answer: This is a personal statement containing common information that two friends have shared with each other. It does not have to cited
8. Americans are guaranteed the right to freely gather for peaceful meetings.
Answer: This is general information stated in a common formality. If they would have stated the Amendment number or the actual wording from the Amendment, then it would have had to been acknowledged as a source of information. Thus citation would have had to be in place.

My first BLOG

Truthfully, I personally did not enjoy setting this up. I had difficulty with the program stating Error, contact blogger with this number.... I attempted to set up the account two times and in tears finally had my son come to the rescue. Oh my knight in shining armor.  I am from the old school. I don't trust the internet and tend to think that everyone is out to get me and my personal information.  My children are constantly making fun of me, but it is hard for me to totally trust a machine.  After finally getting my template chosen, I did enjoy playing with the color pallets creating my "own" look.  I do wish that I could use the rose picture for my background, but the file is too big. I wanted something that I would see each day that would remind me of my children.
