Unit 5 Digging into Databases and Books: Summary

             This assignment I found very interesting.  I personally dealt with computer difficulty. For some reason my browser program was not compatible  for the Book24x7 site. I had to chart a unknown journey of locating my cookies and security program.Who knew there were cookies in the computer, or I would have had many late night snacks. Even after trying three different browser programs I could not access "It Pro".
           So now to the summary of the assignment.  Each one of these resources are just that a resource. The Cannell Library Book Catalog  and the Summit Catalog  each gave me that "old Library" feel.  I felt confident in the information and material I was able to find, yet because I did not have the book in hand; I question whether or not they would truly support the project as much as I hope. Once you obtain the actually item from the library then your will be able to make that call.
NetLibrary is a wonderful database site. After choosing a title it gave me the opportunity to type in key words or phases and view pages that contained such information.Thus it gives you the chance to see if the material within the text truly will be relevant to your research topic. Being able to do this for a variety of titles and at the same time cutting and pasting information into a file would be beneficial to any assignment.
When I accessed Google Books, I was pleased with the vast information that were at your fingertips. I found it very helpful to actually be able to read the material from a book that you may use for a research topic. You can determine whether or not its material would truly be supportive and beneficial to the project.  I liked being able to locate more information about the author and to see if they truly had the credentials to be writing about the topic they were writing about.
I do know that most likely when it comes to a research project that I would use a variety of these resources to support the topic. To just rely on the EBooks and  the Internet  to gather your information is something I would have to adjusted to. I'm sure that it can be accomplished because of the vast databases that are offered through universities and  specialized sites, but I still like visually seeing text on a page and then being able to physically  turn that page.

  1. Emily;

    Nice summary of a challenging week for you.

    You did a good job observing the differences and how you would use each resource. I still think books in print have a lot of value however, it is nice to be able to evaluate before you even see the book and having full text options online is a great benefit.
